The George Stevens Academy cross country team finished 11th out of 74 schools that participated in the Festival of Champions race in Belfast October 3.

John Hassett placed 9th overall for the boys out of a field of 811 finishers. His time of 16:24 was a personal best. Oliver Dillon finished in 48th place, Will Entwisle 71st, Oliver Broughton 134th and Aylen Wolf 137th to round out the top GSA finishers.

In the girls division Eliza Broughton took 37th with a time of 20:11. Zeya Lorio took 47th, Mary Richardson 63rd, Alessandra Rovescala 151st and Tess Williamson took 153rd out of 611 finishers.

According to Coach Erich Reed, the team has developed well these past few years, “as freshmen Rachel, Megan, Hanna Gutow, Frank, Devlin, and Oliver Broughton led both our teams to 50th place finishes at the Festival of Champions (with top 5 average times of 25:10 and 20:02). This year both teams placed 11th with the girls being the 6th team from Maine and the boys 8th.”

In four years the average times have dropped significantly, said Reed, to 21:10 and 17:44.  Falmouth and Orono were the only Maine schools that outpaced both the boys and girls teams at the meet.
