Deer Isle—The boys soccer team lost to Greenville 4-1 on September 24. We got down early as Greenville scored first and second. Krisford Melanio scored our goal assisted by Kim Dong Yeong. Greenville scored again and made a perfect kick with three seconds left in the game to get their fourth goal. Ethan Shepard made 11 saves on Greenville’s 18 shots and Greenville saved 8 of our 8 shots.
The boys came back to beat Schenck 3-2 on September 26. Schenck scored a controversial fluke goal early in the game. We came back with a strong effort and scored the next three goals. Steve Cochrane scored all three of those goals, with two assists from Kim Dong Yeong and one from Paul Zoephel. Kim and Paul each had header assists and Steve headed in two of his goals.
Coach Joe Stinson mentioned how everyone played well all through the field. Schenck scored their second goal on a penalty kick near the end of the game, and we held them off until the end. Ethan Shepard saved 11 of Schenck’s 16 shots and Schenck saved 4 of our 7 shots.
The boys team offense exploded in a 9-0 win over Jonesport on September 28. We scored four goals in the first half and five in the second. We went almost 20 minutes before scoring first and then we just couldn’t stop. Paul Zoephel was looking for his first goal and ended up with three for a hat trick, with assists from Krisford Melanio, Noah Davis, and Kim Dong Yeong.
We also got goals from Steve Cochrane with an assist from Noah Davis, Marvin Merritt, Kim Dong Yeong and Trey Plummer with assists from Krisford Melanio, Noah Davis with an assist from Paul Zoephel, Krisford Melanio unassisted.
The defense was stellar as well as Ethan Shepard who got the shutout by saving 13 of 13 shots. Jonesport made 3 saves on our 18 shots. Again it was a team effort and Coach Stinson remarked that the philosophy of the players was to give goals to everyone. It was nice to be on the other end of a mismatch for a change.
The boys are 4-4 and in 12th place at the moment. To put it in perspective, Bangor Christian at 6-0 is in fifth place as the non-County teams start to even up on games played. We are into the second half of the season and are playing well with an unselfish style. We need to be confident—but not over confident—and good things will happen.
