Mariner boys looks to improve on tennis success Mariners tennis wrap-up

Deer Isle—The boys managed a successful year despite a slow start. We will graduate Matt Duddy and Cody Eaton, but return many other players with several freshmen potentially filling in the holes. Paul Zoephel and Cameron Wendell did very well by the end of the season in singles play. We came on strong at the end of the season, winning a preliminary playoff game before falling to the number one team.

We are not one of the elite teams, but we have shown we can beat many of the teams that are ahead of us in the standings. With some good work this summer, we have the numbers to not only repeat our success but improve it. I feel the Island Country Club is supportive of young players, and the work can be done on an individual basis to build skills, both with the girl and the boy players.

More players key for girls next year

The girls tennis team was plagued by their small numbers and only lost the top singles player Allison Cormier to graduation. Both Jordyn Judkins and Justine Rhys showed steady improvement through the season. Hopefully, the team will pick up a few more players as we lost many close matches, including our playoff game, by the fact we had to forfeit one of the matches.

We improved steadily over the year, and with just another player or two, we could have challenged many teams that beat us. With the returning players and few new players, we should be able to have a more successful season.
