Mariner girls tennis team loses close playoff game

BLue Hill—The girls tennis team once again lost a close match in their preliminary game because they couldn’t field a full team. Coach Mark Churchill mentioned that since the first match of the season, we haven’t had a full team. It is remarkable that we did as well as we did under those circumstances.

The girls lost to Penobscot Valley 3-2 on June 3. Allison Cormier won 6-3, 6-3 at first singles, Jordyn Judkins lost 6-2, 6-2 at second singles, and Justine Rhys lost 6-4, 6-0 at third singles. In the doubles, Alison Eaton/Jess Trainor won 6-4, 6-4 at first doubles, but we had to forfeit the second doubles which cost us the match.

Boys win prelim game but lose to GSA

The boys tennis team won their preliminary playoff match, beating Schenck 4-1 on June 3. We had lost two matches to Schenck by the same score at the beginning of the season, so this is a measure of our improvement. Matt Duddy lost a very close marathon at first singles, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-7, Paul Zoephel won 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at second singles, and Cameron Wendell won 6-4, 6-2 at third singles. In the doubles, Cody Eaton/Justin Eaton won 6-0, 6-0 and Brendan Penfold/Marvin Merritt won 6-4, 7-5.

Unfortunately, the prize for winning the preliminary games was a next-day match with tennis powerhouse George Stevens, which we lost 5-0. Matt Duddy lost 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, Paul Zoephal lost 6-1, 6-1 at second singles, and Cameron Wendell lost 6-2, 6-4 at third singles. In the doubles, Cody Eaton/Justin Eaton lost 6-2, 6-0 and Brendan Penfold/Marvin Merritt lost 6-0, 6-2.
