Deer Isle—The girls softball team lost 10-3 in their prelim game with Stearns on June 10 to finish their season. At press time specific game details were not available.
On June 3, the girls softball team also lost a tough game to George Stevens 18-11. You couldn’t tell it by the final score, but this was a back-and-forth game that was close until the seventh inning. We led the way early in the game, and every time we would take a three- or four-run lead, GSA would fight back to tie it up. We were tied 10-10 after five innings, and GSA was able to get three runs in the sixth to grab the lead.
We couldn’t come back in our half of the inning, and things fell apart in the top of the seventh. Pitcher Natalie Knowlton got a bit rattled with a couple controversial calls at home plate and the corners of the strike zone, and I think it took her out of her game.
We had a few miscues in the field and GSA had a couple of very timely hits, as they put five more runs on the board to lead 18-10. That was too big a hole to get out of. Natalie Knowlton did get eight strikeouts but gave up an uncharacteristic 12 walks. We made six or so errors, and GSA is a good hitting team.
We hit well overall. Morgan Shepard had a home run and a double for five RBIs, Allyson Eaton two doubles and two singles for two RBIs, Natalie Knowlton two singles for two RBIs, Logan Eaton two singles for an RBI, Madison Frazier two singles, and Ashley Haskell a single.
The girls beat Bangor Christian the next day 17-4. Natalie Knowlton pitched a stellar game with six strikeouts and only one walk. We were in control all the way in this game and hit the ball well.
Morgan Shepard was on base every at bat with two doubles, a single, and two walks for three RBIs, Allyson Eaton and Logan Eaton each had two singles and a double for an RBI, Ashley Haskell had two singles for two RBIs, Natalie Knowlton had a double for two RBIs, and Holli Boyce and Jess Gove each had a single for an RBI.
