Yarmouth—The Eagles went the distance at the Maine State Track and Field Championships on June 6, bringing home a handful of medals and placing well above their 16th seed. Thirty boys and 31 girls Class C high school teams from across the state traveled to Yarmouth to compete.
Morgan Dauk, in the javelin throw, and John Hassett, in the 3200 meter run, both placed first, qualifying for the New England meet next Saturday at Thornton Academy. Hassett finished in 9:58:40, with a 5.5 second lead, shaving a full 50 seconds off his season-best time, and he placed third in the 1600 meter run. Dauk covered 114’2”, nearly three feet farther than the second-place throw and was a winner across all school divisions.
“This is the first time I’ve coached two state champions in the same year,” Coach Erich Reed said. “We had a rousing finish to the season.”
The girls 4 x 400 meter relay team of Mazie Smallidge, Alice Dillon, Bella Cimeno and Zeya Lorio, and 4 x 800 team of Lorio, Mary Richardson, Eliza Broughton and Dillon placed third and broke school records. The boys 4 x 400 relay team of Sam Trowbridge, Finn Davis-Batt, Walker Ellsworth and Cameron Gordon also brought home a medal, as did Bella Cimeno in the 300 meter hurdles, Mazie Smallidge in the 100 meter hurdles and triple jump, Davis-Batt in the javelin throw and Gordon in the 400 meter dash.
The girls team placed seventh and the boys 11th overall to end a stellar season for the teams.
