The boys baseball team lost to Sumner 27-5, on May 20, and salvaged being shut out with five runs in our last inning. I wasn’t able to get any highlights from this game, but once again we were dominated by the other team.

The boys were finally able to get two wins by crushing Jonesport 28-1 and 22-0 on May 23. Ethan Shepard pitched in one game and Krisford Melanio pitched in the other. Silas Bates closed out the last game to record his first save of the year. The only Jonesport run was unearned.

There were several firsts in these games. Nathan Winchester had a two-RBI double at his first at bat this year, Steve Cochrane had his first hit and then had three bunt singles, and Kinsey Bartlett got his first hit as well.

Ethan Shepard had a big day at the plate with three doubles and two singles. Both Mason Oliver and Tyson Rice hit legitimate inside the park home runs. Silas Bates had a single, a double and a triple on the day. Noah Davis and Zach Ladd each had multi-hit games as well.

The boys were able to get these two wins and get some feeling of confidence in this rebuilding season. We won’t make the playoffs, but the taste of victory will hopefully motivate us to do better in the future. As Richard Farina wrote in his classic novel, there’s nowhere to go but up. So we need to build on this and turn things around.
