Eight girls and eight boys have qualified to compete at the state championships in Yarmouth—plus teams in all three relay events—and the Hancock County meet on May 22 at MDI showed why.
The girls placed first, ahead of MDI, Ellsworth, Bucksport and Sumner, and the boys second, behind MDI.
Sophomore John Hassett placed first in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and second in the 800 meter run, while sophomore Erik Taylor-Lash was first in the 1600 meter race/walk. Sophomore John Larson placed first in the triple jump and senior Finn Davis-Batt first in the javelin throw. They will all compete at the states, joined by Ian Cameron in the high jump, Walker Ellsworth in the long jump and Alex Taylor-Lash in the pole vault. Davis-Batt and Cameron Gordon also qualified for the 200 and 400 meter dashes.
Sophomore Bella Cimeno repeated her season-long first-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles; freshman Mazie Smallidge took first to Cimeno’s second in the 100 meter event. Both will compete in the hurdles at the states, with second-place winner, freshman Zeya Lorio, slated for the 300. Lorio, who took first in the 800 and 1600 meter runs for the county, will compete in both at the states. Alice Dillon, Morgan Dauk, Mary Richardson and Ava Sealander round out the state qualifiers.
