Deer Isle—The boys baseball team lost its opener to Schenck 6-0 on April 25. Ethan Shepard pitched the entire game, getting eight strikeouts, and after giving up three runs in the first, only three runs in the rest of the game. The Schenck pitcher dominated us as we only got one hit, a single by Ethan Shepard, and we struck out 17 times. Coach Chris Talbot mentioned that Steve Cochrane made three outstanding catches in the outfield. This was not a bad outing for our first time in the field against a team this spring.
The boys lost to Sumner 12-2 on May 4. We started out pretty well and were tied after 3 innings and then gave up a two-run homer to trail 4-2 after five innings. We made a nice 1-2-3 double play to end a threat in the second inning with the bases loaded (that’s pitcher to catcher for the force and then to first for the force).
It all went south after the fifth, as we kept trying different pitchers and Sumner was able to pad the score each of the last two innings. It was almost like two different teams as errors and walks compounded our problems. We did manage four hits, with Mason Oliver hitting two singles and Ethan Shepard and Krisford Melanio each with a single.
The boys are 0-2, and we knew it would be a work in progress at first. There were definitely some positives to be taken form the first two games and we have to build on that. Many of the younger players are now seeing fast pitching that they need to get used to. If we can keep a positive attitude as we go through the learning pains, we will be a stronger team by the end of the season.
