Eagles swim teams notch second straight wins at Foxcroft

The George Stevens Academy girls and boys both won against Foxcroft Academy at a dual meet with Ellsworth on January 23. The girls edged out a 49-44 win while the boys triumphed 58-13. The victories follow a win by both teams at Washington Academy.

While team points counted only against Foxcroft, the boys faced their real competition in individual events against the Ellsworth team. Relay team Alexey Prokopov, Lucas Theoharidis, Evan Soukup and Garrison Looke won their first 200 yard freestyle event in a white-knuckle finish one-quarter second ahead of the Ellsworth team, and Prokopov nabbed the 50 yard freestyle event—by less than two-tenths of a second—for his second straight win over Ellsworth’s Brian Whalley. He also placed second, with Looke third, in the 100 yard freestyle event. Theoharidis also placed in the 50 yard freestyle, and Alex Taylor-Lash third in the 100 yard butterfly.

The girls team had its usual handful of first-place wins powered by Maya Pelletier and Ava Sealander but faced a strong Foxcroft team—that won in points against Ellsworth—across all events.

Sealander won the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard butterfly while Pelletier took the 200 yard and 500 freestyle events and helped power the 400 yard freestyle relay team to a win. Karina Steenberg placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke, with Alyssa Chesney placing fourth.

The team has one meet left, against Hampden, until the Penobscot Valley Conference, a qualifying event for the state championships.
