The girls basketball team beat Bangor Christian hand ily 44-18. Our press pretty much stifled BC’s offense and we caused many turnovers. We led 25-9 at the half and stretched the lead from there. Coach Randy Shepard was able to put in the younger players for most of the fourth quarter.
Allyson Eaton led us with 22 points, Morgan Shepard 6, and Logan Eaton and Holli Boyce each had 4. We struggled putting in many of the offensive rebounds or we would have had a much higher score.
The girls lost a close game with Shead 47-42. We suffered a lot of fouls called on us which not only put Shead on the line, but hampered many of our players to limit their time and energy on defense. It was a close game throughout but we found ourselves trailing 34-27 after three quarters.
We tied it up a couple times in the fourth quarter but fouls caught up to us and Shead pulled out the ball. When we fouled them, they made enough of their foul shots to preserve their win. Holli Boyce, Morgan Shepard, and Orly Vaughan all fouled out in the last quarter. Morgan Shepard led us with 14 points, Allyson Eaton 8, Ashley Haskell 5, and almost everyone else with a couple each.
The girls lost to Machias 61-33. We actually led 9-5 midway through the first quarter, but Machias recovered to lead 14-11 at the end of the quarter. Their tall center was very effective controlling rebounds and getting fouled. Unfortunately she was a very good foul shooter.
We trailed 36-17 at the half and opened the third quarter with a 5-2 run where we missed a couple of inside layups that would have made it closer, but Machias recovered once again. We opened the fourth quarter trailing 44-28 and we tried to overdo and just got deeper in a hole. Coach Shepard put in the subs for experience. Allyson Eaton led us with 16 points, and Morgan Shepard and Logan Eaton each had 5.
The girls are 5-9 and in 14th place without credit for the Bangor Christian win for some reason. We are getting hurt with forcing the offense, causing turnovers, but still need to just get open and shoot. We have played good games against strong teams, as the Penobscot Valley win and the close game with Shead (#3 in Class D). We should have the confidence to tackle every game like that and get a few more wins by the end of the season. We should be in a preliminary round game, and if we play hard, anything can happen.
